N2  - INFLUENCE OF THE VEHICLE ON ABSORPTIONIn our previous papers on inunctions the excretion and absorption of mercury after simple and those after clean inunctions have been compared,1 and the advantage of massive weekly inunctions has been demonstrated.2 In the first article of the present series3 the relation of the concentration of the mercury in the ointment to absorption and excretion has been shown. The function of the oleate and the effect of the size of the particles as found in ointment of colloidal mercury was discussed, while the relation of the vehicle to the absorption of mercury with a petroxolin base was only touched on. It appeared desirable to make a more extensive investigation of this subject since the vehicles of the mercurial ointments of the various pharmacopeias differ considerably, partly in the emulsifiers which are used to extinguish the mercury and partly in
