AB The advent of topical hydrocortisone therapy* during the past year made inevitable the combined use of hydrocortisone with other topical agents. This paper represents an attempt at objective evaluation of an ointment containing 1% hydrocortisone and 3% oxytetracycline (Terramycin) in a petrolatum base. We tried to answer the following questions:Is the addition of oxytetracycline to hydrocortisone necessary?Does hydrocortisone interfere with the cutaneous defense against bacterial invasion?Does hydrocortisone interfere with, augment, or in any other way alter the action of oxytetracycline upon the skin?Does oxytetracycline interfere with, augment, or in any way alter the action of hydrocortisone upon the skin?What valid criteria do we have for diagnosing secondary cutaneous infection as against mere colonization of bacteria?PLAN OF INVESTIGATIONWhen one deals with such a compound, theoretically the following controls are possible:Hydrocortisone-oxytetracycline
