M., a girl aged 13, who was born in the United States of Italian parents, presented herself at the Morrisania City Hospital because of an unusual condition of the skin of the palms and soles. The patient's mother stated that she had noticed the condition for the past five years. The mother said that there was no consanguinity in her own family or in her husband's family and that she was not related to her husband. Both the father and the mother are free from the condition. The patient has two brothers who present no abnormalities of the skin of the palms or the soles.The palms are involved more than the soles. The skin of the entire surface of the palms and soles and of the areas extending to the fingers and toes on the dorsal regions is thickened,
