The topic of medical student participation in patient care is of particular importance for physician educators who hold a dual role in caring for patients and educating future physicians. Dermatology provides numerous opportunities for medical student involvement and is unique because it provides exposure to numerous practical yet minimally invasive procedures—from cryotherapy to skin biopsies—that require a level of technical skill that makes them reasonable for students to perform. Procedures in dermatology are integrated into the majority of office visits, providing students with the necessary patient volume and opportunity to master them over the course of the rotation.
