The article entitled "Verrucous Cyst" by Meyer et al1 in this issue of the Archives comes in a time of increased awareness of viral infections, particularly human papillomavirus. Simultaneously, technology is also providing exciting tools for the investigation of these otherwise elusive mandatory intracellular organisms.

To spice up the sitation, there is an explosive new body of knowledge regarding the role of viral oncoproteins in cell transformation and neoplastic progression.2

Let us look at the situation, first from the clinicopathological point of view. The infectious nature of warts has been known for quite some time. Decades ago, electron microscopic investigations confirmed the presence of human papillomavirus within nuclei of keratinocytes taken from common plantar warts, flat warts, and condylomata acuminata.
