To the Editor.—  In the October 1986 issue of the Archives, Payne et al1 published a combined analysis of cutaneous lymphoid infiltrates using ultrastructural methods and immunohistochemistry. There seems to be general agreement with other published studies2,3 that some type of quantitative ultrastructural approach is useful for the diagnosis of mycosis fungoides. However, each investigator seems to do the study differently and to use different methods of data analysis. Consequently, in order to determine the validity of the conclusions and their comparison to conclusions by others, one must take the methods into consideration. In order to get the same type of clean results and to use the charts published by Payne et al, one must do a study exactly as Payne et al described. Is that possible? No, because the study as published involves subjective operator bias at a key point. The decision has to be made in
