To the Editor.— I have just noted the letter on pitted keratolysis (treated by topical clindamycin hydrochloride) by Burkhart in the October 1980 Archives (116:1104). I wrote an article on pitted keratolysis in Cutis.1 At that time, Cutis was not being indexed in Index Medicus. While there was no difference in the clinical features found, I concluded, with the aid of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, that the organism present was Dermatophilus congolensis. This organism was demonstrated by the Brown-Brenn Gram stain. Morris Gordon, PhD, of the mycology laboratories of the New York State Department of Health, agreed, after staining the organism with Grocott methenamine silver and Giemsa stains, that the organisms appeared typical of D congolensis.
