In January, 1870, the American Journal of Syphilography and Dermatology was established, only one year after the German Archiv für Dermatologie and eighteen years before the British Journal of Dermatology. Although it has been called by several names, including the Journal of Cutaneous and Venereal Diseases, the continuity of the publication continues to the present as the Archives of Dermatology. Our journal has changed over the years, reflecting the many changes in medicine. It has not changed, however, in the resolve of its editors to present the best of medical observation and thought as it pertains to dermatology. This was especially true of Herbert Rattner who now retires as chief editor after serving in various capacities as a member of the editorial board since 1936.
Herb has spent his entire professional career associated in some way with the Archives, always thinking about it, trying to improve it, working for it.
